Andy Warhol and Dorothy Ritter backstage at the Opry.

Opry announcer Keith Bilbrey remembers a more personal invitation from Mrs. Ritter that made his first Thanksgiving in Nashville very special. “The year I moved to Nashville, in 1974, Dorothy Ritter invited everyone who worked at WSM—the radio stations and television station—who had no family here, to come to their home on Franklin Road for Thanksgiving dinner. She knew we had to work, and most of us were just kids and had come from somewhere else to work in Nashville. Since we couldn’t get home for the holiday, she invited us to hers. Tex had passed away that January, but the boys were there for the holiday. I think she ended up with more people than she expected, though. There was quite a crowd. I overheard her telling her boys, ‘Jonathan and Tom, run over to the neigh-bor’s house and see if they can give us some of their food so we can feed these folks.’ That’s exactly what they did, and they came back with enough food to feed everyone there. She was such a gracious, generous woman, you just wanted to be gracious and generous back!”
